No Medium Required: Making Things Just Because I Can
I’ve decided it’s time to introduce a new idea—and maybe a little bit of myself along with it.
I love to create. The problem is, I don’t seem to have just one creative thing that I love to do. One day I might be making candles. The next, I’m painting, playing with clay, transforming a found object into something completely different, or coming up with an idea that I absolutely have to try. And then, just as quickly, I might get bored and move on to something else.
For a long time, I thought that meant I wasn’t really an artist. Artists are supposed to have a medium, right? They paint. They sculpt. They throw pottery. They work with textiles. They draw. I do a little of all of that—and a whole lot of things that don’t fit neatly into any category. So I decided to stop trying to fit into one.
No Medium Required
That’s the idea behind No Medium Required. It’s a place for creativity without rules about what you’re supposed to make or what you’re supposed to call yourself. Candles, clay, paint, found objects—anything that makes me think, I wonder what I could do with that? Why not?
I don’t consider myself an artist in the traditional sense. I’m someone who likes to make things. Sometimes they turn out great. Sometimes they turn out weird. Sometimes they become something completely different from what I originally imagined. And sometimes they end up sitting on a shelf while I move on to my next idea. And that’s okay.
I Get Bored Easily—and I Think That’s a Good Thing
My curiosity has a short attention span. I might become completely obsessed with making something, learn everything I can about it, make a bunch of them—and then suddenly think, Okay…what’s next? Instead of fighting that, I’m embracing it.
Maybe creativity doesn’t have to mean mastering one craft. Maybe it means following whatever makes you curious at the moment. There’s something freeing about trying something simply because it looks fun, without the pressure to become an expert or even be particularly good at it. Sometimes you just have to make it and see what happens.
Creating Without Having to Be an Artist
I think there are probably a lot of people like me—people who love making things but don’t necessarily identify as artists. People who see an old object and immediately imagine what it could become, buy craft supplies because someday they’re going to do something with them, or want to try pottery, painting, candle making, jewelry, sewing, woodworking, or whatever else catches their attention.
People who have lots of interests and don’t want to choose just one.
This is for us.
No Medium Required is about the joy of creating, not perfection. It’s about experimenting, playing, trying something new, and making something with your hands. Sometimes you might even make something that makes absolutely no sense to anyone else—but you thought it would be fun.
So, What Am I Making?
Honestly? I’m not entirely sure. And I think that’s the best part.
There will be candles, painted things, clay, found objects, and probably a few projects that make me wonder what I was thinking. There will almost certainly be something completely unexpected around the corner, and I’m inviting you along for the ride.
Maybe you’ll find something you love. Maybe you’ll be inspired to try something yourself. Maybe you’ll look at something I’ve made and think, I could do that. I hope you do.
Because creativity doesn’t require a degree, a studio, a particular talent—or even a medium. Sometimes it just requires curiosity and the willingness to make something.
No Medium Required.
Anonymous creations, in whatever form they take.
