I\u2019ve decided it\u2019s time to introduce a new idea\u2014and maybe a little bit of myself along with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I love to create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The problem is, I don\u2019t seem to have just one<\/strong> creative thing that I love to do. One day I might be making candles. The next, I\u2019m painting, playing with clay, turning a found object into something completely different, or coming up with an idea that I absolutely have to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then, just as quickly, I might get bored and move on to something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For a long time, I thought that meant I wasn\u2019t really an artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Artists are supposed to have a medium, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n They paint. They sculpt. They throw pottery. They work with textiles. They draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I do a little of all of that\u2014and a whole lot of things that don\u2019t fit neatly into any category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I decided to stop trying to fit into one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s the idea behind No Medium Required<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a place for creativity without rules about what you\u2019re supposed<\/em> to make or what you\u2019re supposed<\/em> to call yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Candles? Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Clay? Sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paint? Definitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Found objects? Even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something I picked up because I liked the shape, texture, color, or simply because I thought, I wonder what I could do with that?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Why not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n I don\u2019t consider myself an artist in the traditional sense. I\u2019m someone who likes to make things<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes they turn out great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes they turn out weird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes they become something completely different from what I originally imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And sometimes they end up sitting on a shelf while I move on to my next idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My curiosity tends to have a short attention span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I might become completely obsessed with making something, learn everything I can about it, make a bunch of them\u2014and then suddenly think, Okay\u2026what\u2019s next?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead of fighting that, I\u2019m embracing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe creativity doesn\u2019t have to mean mastering one craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe it can mean following whatever makes you curious at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s something freeing about giving yourself permission to try something simply because it looks fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No pressure to become an expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No requirement to be \u201cgood\u201d at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just make it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I think there are probably a lot of people like me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People who love making things but don\u2019t necessarily identify as artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People who see an old object and immediately imagine what it could become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People who buy craft supplies because someday<\/em> they\u2019re going to do something with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People who want to try pottery, painting, candle making, jewelry, collage, sewing, woodworking, or whatever else catches their attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People who have lots of interests and don’t want to choose just one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is for us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n No Medium Required is about the joy of creating\u2014not perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s about experimenting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trying something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Making something with your hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And sometimes making something that makes absolutely no sense to anyone else but you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because you thought it would be fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Honestly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m not entirely sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And I think that\u2019s the best part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There will be candles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There will be painted things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There will be clay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There will be found objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There will probably be some projects that make me wonder what I was thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And there will almost certainly be something completely unexpected around the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m inviting you along for the ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you\u2019ll find something you love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you\u2019ll be inspired to try something yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you\u2019ll look at something I\u2019ve made and think, I could do that.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n I hope you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because creativity doesn\u2019t require a degree, a studio, a particular talent\u2014or even a medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it just requires curiosity and the willingness to make something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No Medium Required.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Anonymous creations in whatever form they take.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" No Medium Required: Making Things Just Because I Can I\u2019ve decided it\u2019s time to introduce a new idea\u2014and maybe a little bit of myself along with it.
